Armadillidium frontirostre is a handsome, robust pillbug species from southeastern Europe, instantly recognisable by its broad, domed body and the distinctive forward‑projecting “frontal shield” that gives it a subtly horned appearance. In the hobby it’s often circulated under this name, though many specialists now consider the commonly kept form to be Armadillidium cf. pallasi, a closely related species with similar morphology. Regardless of the taxonomic wrinkle, it’s a large, impressive Armadillidium—typically reaching 2–2.5 cm—with a slate‑grey to charcoal body and a slightly metallic sheen that becomes more pronounced in mature adults.
In behaviour, it’s a classic Mediterranean‑type roller: bold, active, and surprisingly hardy once established. These isopods come from warm, seasonally dry habitats, and that ecological background shows clearly in captivity. They prefer well‑ventilated, mostly dry enclosures with only a small, consistently damp refuge area. Too much humidity can cause moulting issues, while a dry‑dominant setup with a moisture gradient allows them to regulate themselves naturally. They’re strong feeders, grazing on leaf litter, soft rotting wood, and biofilm, and they readily accept supplemental foods such as sweet potato, courgette, fish flakes, and a reliable calcium source.
Given the right conditions, A. frontirostre becomes a rewarding, visually striking species that settles quickly and breeds steadily. Their size, durability, and attractive armour make them an excellent display isopod for bioactive or species‑only setups, and their semi‑arid preferences offer a useful contrast to the many moisture‑loving species in the hobby.
