Columbian Rhino Beetle (Megasoma janus ramierezorum)

Megasoma janus ramirezorum is a powerful, heavy‑bodied rhinoceros beetle with a deep black, almost lacquered exoskeleton and a long, forward‑projecting horn on the male’s head. Compared with the broader, more massive Megasoma actaeon group, ramirezorum is more streamlined, with long legs and a slightly narrower thorax — a look that gives it a sleek, predatory presence despite being a sap‑feeding species. The subspecies originates from Colombia and surrounding regions, where adults emerge during the warm, humid season to feed on tree sap and fermenting fruit.

In captivity, this beetle is admired for its calm temperament and impressive size. Males commonly exceed 100 mm, with exceptional individuals reaching 110–116 mm, as shown in multiple photographed specimens in the search results. Their glossy black cuticle and long horn make them a standout display species, and they are often considered one of the most elegant Megasoma taxa. Females are hornless, robust, and slightly shorter, but equally striking with their smooth, rounded elytra.

Larval development follows the typical Megasoma pattern: long, slow, and heavily dependent on substrate quality. L3 larvae are large, cream‑coloured, and powerful burrowers, requiring deep, nutrient‑rich decayed wood or flake soil. Pupation chambers must be spacious and firm, as cramped or unstable chambers can lead to horn deformities — a problem well‑documented in captive ramirezorum males. Adults are strong but gentle, feeding readily on beetle jellies, banana, and other soft fruits.

Overall, Megasoma janus ramirezorum is a spectacular, high‑value species for serious Dynastinae keepers — combining size, rarity, and a distinctive aesthetic that sets it apart from the more commonly kept Megasoma elephas or M. actaeon.
