Armadillidium klugii ‘Montenegro’ is one of the most visually striking European isopods in the hobby, instantly recognisable for its bold red, black, and yellow patterning. The Montenegro locality is particularly vivid, with crisp, high‑contrast markings that hold their colour well into adulthood. It’s a species that appeals equally to beginners and seasoned keepers: hardy, active, and reliably on display, making it a standout choice for bioactive enclosures or educational setups.
In captivity, this species thrives in a warm, moderately dry environment with a stable humidity gradient. The bulk of the enclosure should remain well‑ventilated and on the drier side, while a dedicated moist zone — typically a moss‑filled corner — provides the microclimate they need for successful moulting. A substrate blend of soil, sand, clay, and abundant leaf litter supports their natural behaviours, and bark stacks or cork pieces give them structure to explore and shelter beneath.
Diet is straightforward and varied. Leaf litter and decaying wood form the foundation, but they benefit from regular protein and calcium supplementation. High‑quality isopod diets, fish flakes, and occasional vegetables or soft fruits help maintain strong growth and vibrant colouration. Adults typically reach around 18–20 mm, and juveniles develop their characteristic patterning gradually with each successive moult, making them an engaging species to raise.

All good, as always! Thankyou!
I’ve ordered multiple times, from leaf insects to isopods, and plan to place another order shortly. My insects have always arrived speedily and carefully packaged in perfect health, all are thriving here with me in their new home. Would recommend to anyone.
