Tenodera sinensis—the Chinese Mantis—is one of the largest and most adaptable mantids in the world, famous for its impressive size, hardy nature, and wide distribution. Introduced to North America over a century ago for pest control, it has since become well‑established across much of the continent, while remaining native to China, Korea, Japan, and surrounding regions. Adults are long, powerful, and elegant, typically green or brown with a distinctive pale stripe along the edge of the wings. Females are especially imposing, often reaching lengths that make them one of the biggest mantids available to hobbyists.

Behaviourally, T. sinensis is bold, opportunistic, and highly predatory. They have excellent eyesight, a strong feeding response, and a willingness to tackle large prey items. Despite their size, they are agile climbers and surprisingly tolerant of handling and routine enclosure maintenance. Nymphs grow quickly with regular feeding and are generally robust, though they can be cannibalistic if not given space and food.

In captivity, this species thrives under a wide range of conditions, making it a favourite for beginners and educators as well as keepers who enjoy large, charismatic mantids. They appreciate vertical space, good airflow, and a varied diet, and they reward consistent care with impressive growth and confident, engaging behaviour. Their combination of size, adaptability, and personality makes Tenodera sinensis a true classic in the mantis hobby.
