Burro's Tail (Sedum burrito)

Sedum burrito—often called Baby Burro’s Tail or Baby Donkey’s Tail—is a much‑loved trailing succulent known for its dense, bead‑like leaves and soft blue‑green colouring. It forms long, pendulous stems packed tightly with fleshy, rounded leaves, giving it the characteristic “burrito” look. Although visually similar to Sedum morganianum, this form has shorter, rounder leaves and a more compact overall texture, which is why many growers treat it as a distinct cultivar. Its origin is somewhat mysterious; it was first described from greenhouse-grown specimens and is believed to be a hybrid or selection linked to plants from Veracruz, Mexico.

As a houseplant, Sedum burrito thrives in bright, indirect light, though it can tolerate some direct sun if acclimated. Too little light leads to leggy, sparse growth, while too much intense sun can scorch the leaves or cause a reddish tint. It prefers a well-draining succulent mix, ideally amended with perlite or pumice, and responds best to a “soak and dry” watering rhythm—thorough watering followed by a complete dry-out of the soil. Overwatering is the most common cause of decline, as the plant is highly susceptible to root rot. During winter, its water needs drop dramatically, and it should be kept on the dry side.

Temperature-wise, it grows comfortably at typical indoor conditions (15–26°C) but must be protected from cold drafts and frost, as temperatures below 5°C can cause leaf drop. Outdoors in the UK, it’s best treated as a conservatory or summer patio plant. It rarely needs pruning and is generally pest-free, though mealybugs and scale can occasionally appear. Propagation is extremely easy—individual leaves root readily, and stem cuttings establish quickly once calloused. Over time, mature plants produce offsets around the base, which can be separated and potted on.
