Bumblebee Flat Backed Millipede (Polydesmus sp. "bumblebee)

Polydesmus sp. “Bumblebee” is a small, flat‑backed millipede distinguished by its yellow‑banded patterning, giving it a bright, almost cartoonish look as it moves through leaf litter. Unlike the tropical “bumblebee millipede” (Anadenobolus monilicornis), this species belongs to the order Polydesmida, meaning it has a flattened body with pronounced lateral keels and a more secretive, ground‑hugging lifestyle. It spends most of its time hidden beneath decaying leaves, bark, and soft, rotted wood, emerging mainly at night to graze on microflora and decomposing plant matter.

In behaviour, it is gentle, shy, and highly moisture‑dependent. Polydesmus species thrive in cool, humid environments and are far less tolerant of heat than many tropical millipedes. They prefer stable dampness rather than saturation, relying on a rich substrate filled with leaf litter and rotting wood to meet both their nutritional and environmental needs. Their defensive chemistry—producing small amounts of hydrogen cyanide when stressed—is typical of the group but harmless in the tiny quantities released, serving more as a reminder to handle them minimally and respectfully.

In captivity, they do best in a compact, bioactive‑style enclosure with 3–5 cm of moist, organic substrate and plenty of cover. A small group can be kept comfortably in a 20 × 15 × 15 cm setup, provided humidity remains high and temperatures stay within the cooler end of the invertebrate‑keeping spectrum. With the right conditions, Polydesmus sp. “Bumblebee” becomes a charming, low‑maintenance detritivore
