The Black Beauty Stick Insect is listed as Critically Endangered on the IUCN Red List. Native to a tiny region in norther Peru's Cordillera de Condor, its wild population is confined to an area of less than 5 hectares. This species faces severe threats from habitat destruction, primarily due to agricultural expansion, livestock farming and wildfires.
Despire the status in the wild, it breeds well in captivity and is now kept privately and in zoos worldwide. Interestingly, it shared its habitata with the endangered Mananon Poison Dart Frog, though no direct conservation programes currently targer the stick insect itself.
