Onchestus rentzi, commonly known as the Crowned Stick Insect, is a visually striking species native to the coastal rainforests of Queensland and the Northern Territory, Australia. Described in 2006 and named after orthopterist David Rentz, it’s easily recognized by the crown-like protrusion on its head and deep purple wings, which contrast beautifully with its dark black-grey body. Adults reach up to 120 mm and feed on plants like eucalyptus, bramble, and lilly pilly. Though capable of gliding, they’re more often seen calmly navigating foliage, blending in with their surroundings thanks to superb camouflage.
