Heterometrus silenus is a large, glossy black forest scorpion found across India, Malaysia, and Indonesia. Reaching around 6 inches in length, it shows the classic Heterometrus build: powerful pedipalps, a slimmer tail compared to African species, and a fully black telson that distinguishes it from the amber‑stingered Pandinus imperator. In the wild it inhabits humid tropical forests, spending most of its time hidden in deep burrows or natural crevices. It is nocturnal, secretive, and defensive when disturbed, relying more on its strong claws than its mild venom.
In captivity, H. silenus is valued for its impressive size, hardy nature, and natural burrowing behaviour. It thrives in deep, humid substrate with stable warmth and good ventilation, mirroring the forest floor conditions of its native range. Females may live 7–8 years and males around 5, making it a long‑term species for keepers who appreciate bold, visually striking scorpions that display classic forest‑dwelling behaviours.
