Actias luna, commonly known as the Luna moth, is one of North America’s most recognisable giant silk moths. Its soft green wings, long trailing hindwing tails and delicate eyespots give it an almost ethereal appearance, making it a favourite among naturalists and collectors. Adults live only a few days and do not feed, relying entirely on energy stored during their larval stage.
 
The species inhabits deciduous forests across Canada, the United States and northern Mexico, where host trees such as hickory, walnut, sweetgum and birch support its development. Caterpillars are bright green with subtle yellow and red markings, growing steadily through several instars before spinning a papery cocoon. Depending on latitude, Luna moths may have one to three generations per year, with northern populations overwintering as pupae.
 
Despite their brief adult lives, Luna moths play an important ecological role as part of North America’s diverse Saturniid fauna. Their hindwing tails are thought to help disrupt bat echolocation, a remarkable adaptation that highlights the evolutionary pressures shaping nocturnal insects. Today, they remain a symbol of forest health and one of the most admired moth species worldwide.
