African Velvet Spider (Gandanameno sp.)

Gandanameno is a remarkable genus of African velvet spiders (family Eresidae), known not only for their dense, plush body covering and thick, feltlike silk retreats, but also for their unusually social lifestyle. Found across southern and eastern Africa, these spiders inhabit dry savannahs, scrublands, and rocky outcrops where they build communal silk structures in crevices, under stones, or within vegetation. Their compact, velvety bodies and earthy tones blend seamlessly into these environments, while their dense silk “tents” provide protection, humidity, and a shared living space.

In the wild, Gandanameno species often live in cooperative groups, with multiple individuals sharing the same retreat. This sociality is rare among spiders and is a hallmark of the velvet spider family. Within these colonies, individuals may assist in maintaining the communal web, defending the retreat, and even participating in cooperative brood care. Their lifestyle is slow, deliberate, and deeply tied to the stability of their shared silk structures, which act as both home and hunting platform. From these retreats, they ambush prey using vibrations transmitted through the dense silk.

In captivity, Gandanameno is a calm, hardy, and rewarding genus, especially when kept in small groups that allow their natural social behaviour to shine. They thrive in enclosures with vertical and horizontal anchor points—bark slabs, cork tubes, stacked stones—where they can build their characteristic communal retreats. Moderate warmth, stable humidity, and minimal disturbance encourage them to web heavily and settle as a group. They feed readily on appropriately sized insects and grow at a steady, manageable pace. Their combination of unusual sociality, dense silk architecture, and gentle demeanour makes them a standout species for keepers who enjoy observing natural behaviours rarely seen in spiders.
