African Stick Mantis (Tenodera superstitiosa)

Tenodera superstitiosa is a tall, elegant mantis found across much of West Africa. Its long, slender frame and soft green‑brown colouring allow it to disappear into grasses and light woodland, giving it a calm, understated beauty. The species has the classic Tenodera shape: an elongated body, long pronotum, and poised stance that makes it instantly recognisable.

In its native habitats, T. superstitiosa lives among warm savannahs and lightly wooded areas, often perching on tall vegetation where it can watch for passing prey. It’s an alert, confident hunter with quick reflexes and strong flight, capable of moving between perches with ease. This combination of agility and patience makes it well suited to open landscapes where visibility and speed matter.

Across its range—from Guinea and Sierra Leone through Ghana, Togo, Benin and Nigeria—this mantis plays a small but important role in local ecosystems. As an active predator of insects, it helps maintain balance within grassland communities, contributing to the natural rhythm of West Africa’s biodiversity. It’s a striking example of how specialised and diverse mantis species can be, even within familiar genera like Tenodera.
