Argema mimosae, the African Moon Moth, is one of Africa’s most beautiful Saturniids — a smaller continental counterpart to the Madagascan Moon Moth. Adults are a vivid emerald green with long, elegant tail‑like hindwings, yellow‑and‑red eyespots, and a distinctive grey “furry” leading edge on the forewings that gives them a rough, aerodynamic texture. Wingspan is typically 10–12 cm, with a total length of 12–14 cm from head to tail. Their wing shape and colouring mimic dried foliage, especially the elongated tails, which resemble a dead leaf stem — a camouflage strategy well suited to their woodland habitats.
 
The species is widespread across eastern Africa and more locally in southern Africa, including South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Mozambique. It inhabits subtropical bushveld, coastal woodland, and warm forest edges, where two broods per year occur in the southern part of its range. Caterpillars are bright green with thin white bands and rows of projections, feeding on a range of native trees including Commiphora, Sclerocarya birrea (marula), and Spirostachys africana (tamboti).
 
In captivity, A. mimosae is considered not difficult to rear when kept warm and dry. Caterpillars grow rapidly at higher temperatures, pupating in 4–5 weeks under warm conditions. They require good ventilation, dry leaves, and avoidance of condensation; young larvae can be slow to start feeding. Suitable foodplants include Anacardiaceae (Rhus, Schinus, Sclerocarya), Liquidambar, and Eucalyptus gunnii.
